John Burt Sanders (b. 1984, Arcade, New York) is an American painter who lives and works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Working primarily in abstraction, Sanders explores the formal relationships between color, texture, line, and composition while investigating systems of order and their inherent limitations. His paintings often balance structure and instability, inviting prolonged looking through subtle shifts in color, layered surfaces, and intricate networks of painted forms.
Sanders received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Ohio University in 2011 and a BFA in Painting and Art History from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 2007. He was awarded an Artist Opportunity Grant from the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and completed a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in 2014. In 2019, his work was featured in the Northeast edition of New American Paintings, Issue #140.
